Drink Pretty Creature

Like many couples, Brainiac and enjoy the occasional evening out sans offspring. Happy hour, with its drink specials and snacky bites, is a particular favorite and we are quite devoted to 25-cent wing nights. Yes, it's true - I of the homemade pickles and organic peach jam can be bought at the low, low cost of a glass of sauvignon blanc and a plate of extra-hot Buffalo wings. I'd be hard pressed to even pretend shame so let's not bother.

Anyway, our recent cocktail culture habits have given rise to a new obsession: bar snacks. In case you lead a completely upstanding life and are unaware, it's not uncommon for bars to put out little bowls of this or that nibble, a salty lagniappe designed to encourage the purchase of yet another refreshing adult beverage. Alert drinkers might notice pretzels or nuts or the like and, in the best establishments, these are not stale (I sometimes suspect the purchase of vast warehouses of, say, bagel chips and have believed on occasion that a snack dating to Ronald Reagan's first term in office is being thrust in my direction. This practice must be discouraged by taking one's custom elsewhere. Life is too short, friends.)

Even when the bar snacks are up to code, we may not be heading out as often as we'd like (see also: the new frugality), preferring to stay in and have pals in for a drink and a bite. The drinks part is easy because, honestly, people just aren't that picky no matter what they claim to the contrary but when it comes to the accompaniments, standards must be kept. The ideal bar snack should 1) be able to be prepared ahead, 2) be served without need of cutlery or, heck, even a napkin, 3) enhance the taste of a wide variety of drinksies and 4) taste great. Hitting all four points is harder than you might expect but by gosh I try.

As I type I'm roasting chick peas seasoned with cayenne, adobo, black pepper and chili powder. The smell is fantastic but early taste tests are not promising. I remain convinced that the method will work, however. Open cans, drain and dry the chick peas, spread in a sprayed, rimmed cookie sheet and roast away at 450 degrees, having sprinkled very generously with whatever flavor seems like it might work. Next try: garam masala and amchuur powder.

I've got a cocktail bug for okra, too. Sliced and dry roasted with similarly prepared hot peppers...I don't know. In my mind it's crispy and blisteringly spiced and completely absent the okra slime factor. Maybe covered in cornmeal? I don't want to mess with frying and being stuck in the kitchen, though, not when I'm supposed to be perched perkily on an ottoman listening to my friend J. hold forth about her very disastrous, painful, and hysterically funny honeymoon (it's o.k., they're still married).

One of my favorite restaurants here nearby the homestead pretty much serves only meat. I know, its insane. Great, though, and I refuse to bend my mind toward even possibly thinking otherwise. This place serves bacon as an appetizer, and it is awesome - thick cut and slow roasted and just as full of umami as you could want. Another restaurant I enjoy sells house-cut bacon cured to order and I might see my way clear to trying to replicate such a snack at home. I've seen variations of brown-sugar bacon or bacon wrapped around whatnot but I think when it's all said and done, the sugar and the whatnots (scallops, artichoke hearts, water chestnuts) are really just excuses to eat bacon and wherever possible I advocate for the elimination of excuses. This, I feel, has promise as a drinks go-along.

Finally, I've also been messing around with papdum, which have the great advantage of being very quick to prepare even though you must fry them. They're so fast that you can cook up an enormous tower of papdum - I like the black pepper and chili varieties - and still have time wipe the counter and change your shirt before the doorbell rings. They stay crispy and are as whispy as angel's breath even has they pack a huge flavorful punch. You can serve them with chutneys but it's not necessary.

None of these snacks costs much - less than a dollar per snacker for very generous portions - or requires much in the way of effort, but all add so much to the experience of sitting and enjoying a laugh with good pals. At the very least you will have spared your friends yet another bowl of chips and salsa. Or, goodness forbid, Reagan-era bagel chips.

I'm here, just a bit overtaken by events. Should be back this weekend, probably Sunday after the Girl's birthday party and the resolution of a small amount of familial drama.

And then? I want to talk about All Recipes a bit, gelatin desserts, my favorite canning books and why I want 2008 to be the Year of the Dinner Party.

It occured to me some weeks ago that my expectations for exciting activities in March were fairly high. I simply had nothing interesting to write about and I puzzled over this until I realized that March '06 had us settling into a new house and March '05 saw us preparing to put our former house on the market. In March '04 I had a new baby and in March '03 we had just moved into the house we sold in '06. So you can see where a normal March with no new infants and no real estate news may seem a bit blah. So if I'm not post-partum and we're not fixing to move (or recover from moving), you might wonder what I've been up to.

In no particular order, I have been:

    1) Falling for Google's April Fool's joke.

    2) Sending psychic apologies to Daniel Craig. I have finally seen Casino Royale and I am deeply shamed over my initial, uh, disinclination toward him as Bond. I have been open here about my enthusiasm for the Bond Emeritus but, wow, beach scene, anyone?

    3) Sorting out my professional life, with no appreciable result.

    4) Bemoaning man's (woman's) inhumanity to man (woman). (Aside: I had no idea that expression is a Robert Burns thing. And they say that blogging isn't educational! O.K. I don't know if anyone actually says that, but you know they think it.)

    5) Failing at the execution of a cute Easter project.

    6) Waiting for my butter to soften so I can make the Cheddar Olives for tomorrow's egg hunt. Also on the menu: a very traditional spice cake with cream cheese frosting, deviled eggs my way, sundried tomato and garlic mini-tarts, Fromage Fort and some chocolate oaty cookie things I learned from Susie J's indespensible site of baking fabulousness. All of this is great, of course, but seriously, those olives? Try them.

Oh, and I've also watch my son ride his bike without training wheels and swim without some kind of floaty thing or belt and looked on as my daughter wrote her name all by herself for the first time.

I guess it's been a big month after all.

Today we hosted the Boy Wonder's sixth birthday party. In the event that my admitedly rudimentary cake decorating skills do not make this obvious, this was a NASA-themed party. This cake is meant to resemble the moon, although without the lunar landing module you would be forgiven for not quite getting that.

Sigh. My baby is six. This has been rather hard on me, perhaps because there's the whole "official school-age" thing, too. I don't know. In any case, the party was enjoyed by all, "all" in this case meaning seven kids ages five and six. The adults present are all now quite exhausted.

Because we have apparently entered the birthday party = a couple hours childcare zone with this event, I didn't plan on lots of adult entertainment as I have in previous years. This year's birthday party philosophy dictates that the kids must be kept moving for the entire two hours and under no circumstances should encounter an unprogrammed second. While lots of unstructured time was quite charming at ages 4 and 5, the amount and variety of trouble a bunch of six year old boys can find alarms me, so for an afternoon that involves drop-off playtime in conjunction with lots of sugar (see also: moon birthday cake) just call me Cruise Director Mommy.

I don't think it can be underestimated the joy that diet coke/mento rockets brings to the pre-K/K crowd (not to mention any geeky parents they might have lurking about). Followed by little foam finger rocket thingies, a paper airplane distance flight contest, a space shuttle pinata and something else I've already blocked out, well, in the words of one guest, "This is a great party! The mess is awesome!" And, really, isn't that the point?

Tonight's weather forecast carries a frost warning for tomorrow morning. Lovely. So the (few unplanted) petunias will need to come in tonight - because they'll be needed to replace the ones I've already planted!, along with the tomatoes, peppers and herbs that the Boy Wonder and I (perhaps over-) enthusiastically purchased on Monday. All week I've been bemoaning the lack of time that prevented us from getting them in the ground but now, of course, our busyness is like a gift designed to keep us from wasting a not-insignificant sum in veggie starts. But then there are the seeds. The Boy wanted desparately to plant some melons and pumpkins and so we did, and now may end up having to reseed them. Of course, if it comes to that I'll probably reseed with out telling him. I'd hate to have him discover at such a tender age the frustration that gardening can bring no matter how much you love it.

The open house went well. We enjoyed meeting some new people and have time to visit with those neighbors we had already met and the kids behaved beautifully - so an all around successful afternoon by my count, despite the gloomy weather. I ended up making one extra dessert from a recipe given to me by my sister in law just the night before. I don't know where she found it, but it bears sharing here because it's not often that one encounters a cookie so easy to make and which offers such great results with so little effort. I don't know if there's an official name for these, so I'll just call them...

Nutella Crisps - Place about a teaspoon of Nutella in the center of a dumpling wrapper. Fold the wrapper corner-to-corner, forming a triangle and encasing the Nutella. Seal with water or beaten egg. When you've made as many of these as you want, heat about half an inch of veggie oil to the point when a small piece of wrapper sizzles right away when put in the pan. Then begin frying the triangles a few at a time, taking care to avoid crowding and turning each after 20-30 seconds so that each side becomes golden. When done, remove each crisp to a towel-covered plate to drain. When cooled completely, remove to another plate and cover. The crisps may be made a day ahead and reheated in a 250 degree oven. To serve, pile on a pretty plate and sift powdered sugar over all.
