I'm indebted to a young man from Berlin who writes "Find attached a photo of a guy I saw on the Berlin subway today. It was 36C outside at the time. THIRTY SIX! His coat was ankle length, thick thick leather with thick thick lining. Plus boots. And sunglasses. He was looking very red and sweaty around the face (diminishing his goth credentials) I would've blacked out the dudes eyes to protect his identity, but he probably would've liked that." Congratulations Jim, you've made the hall of fame! I especially admire the finger over the lens, proving you surreptitiously took the shot with your phone. We can all learn a lesson from young Jim, friends - get that covert camera phone action going!

Guests Merry With Your Cheer

My sister and her family are coming to visit this weekend. Among the routine logistical back-and-forths, the plans have involved a long Facebook thread about what we'll eat while they're here and where we'll buy it and how it will be prepared and whether or not I'll bother pleasing anyone but the two of us.

This kind of selfishness will surprise no one who knows me even a little bit well. It also has some precedent when applied to my sister and myself. We're the duo that, once upon a time, flew clear across the country to visit with our father's sisters and spent the entire long weekend with them eating pancakes at this very specific place and having dessert at that very specific place and so on (that we were young at the time and somewhat in their care comforts me in that it means we come by our obsessions honestly). Among other memories, I carry with me the yogurt and berries we ate at some posh hotel (the only breakfast we could afford), the peach daiquiris our grandmother served (it was the last time I saw her before her death less than two months later), the picnic lunch our aunt packed for the plane ride back to Philadelphia (shrimp & cream cheese spread on mini bagels which lasted until we just barely cleared the runway in San Francisco).

Some years after that trip we sat together in our parents' kitchen with the man that she would soon marry. Why we were there and our parents were not I don't recall, but I do remember what we ate. Brie and roasted garlic (hey, it was the 90s), a pesto made with half spinach and half basil (it shrunk in the micro), smoked salmon. That my future brother-in-law loves my sister was abundantly evident because knowing him better now I can say that there's no way on earth we'd get away with putting that array of foodstuffs on the table these days.

She'd like to do a bit of canning while they're visiting so I'm hoping to cue up some brandied blueberries or blackberries. That's an easy choice because we won't need to monitor a jelling point or whatever and can thus accommodate the distractions our collected five children will no doubt visit upon us. We'll also visit the local farm market, the merits of which she's listened to me extol for years now. I'll buy a couple chickens to grill and maybe some peaches to make into soup. Friday night I'll grill some cheese (yes! it's true - man, I love this stuff) and wrap bacon around jalapeños from the plants out by the old stone wall. We'll open the olives that are already marinating and the red onions I mixed up earlier this evening. Collectively, they'll be the perfect foils for a hot, humid Philadelphia summer evening.

When my sister comes to town.

Gothalo spotted

Yes it's true - London can have heatwaves too. And when the Daystar is shining, these black'clad darklings do nothing more than don a pair of fishnet gloves. Oh, the temptation of fate! That peddalo won't get you far from the ultraviolet, nor will the Serpentine's swans protect you with their oversized wings. Though come to think of it, that would make a pretty good Goth accessory - a trained Swan to follow you round and act as a gothasol. Any Swan Uppers around fancy taking up the challenge?

p.s. Yes I know it's a bit fuzzy, but frankly I've just applied for a job with Ben's company, so I'm doing all I can to gain favour in his camp :)

True. Happy. You.

    Hi, everyone…how’s life? :)

It’s been a while since I shared about my life, don’t you think? All I can say is that BIG changes are turning up in my life, and I’m more than happy to take on all the challenges I will be facing...

Anyway, some random thoughts of mine.

    Being true.
I’ve finally found this tiny bit inside of me that has significantly helped me in becoming a happier person (cheesy enough? ;p). It’s surprising that it took me this long to actually realize that what I wanted in life has been there all along…I was just too afraid to admit it and all the more, go for it. Sometimes we people tend to hide behind justifications and rationalizations, until you become conscious that you wouldn’t have needed to justify and rationalize anything if you were simply doing what you’ve been wanting to do. Life feels simple when you don’t have too many excuses, even simpler when you don’t need to make any.

    Being happy.
A very good friend of mine raised an interesting view just now…she said, “but even when you’re already happy doing what you’ve been wanting to do, some people just like to make you forget the joy of it”. It takes a looooong process, a strong determination, to steel yourself from external discouragements that can take you down. Everyone has their say…so it’s okay. When we spend too much of energy and time bothering theirs, I guess we are the ones responsible of our own loss of happiness. Happiness is a mindset. You don’t create it, and it’s not a destination. It’s your mindset that takes you along the way. This life is yours to enjoy.

    Being you.
Sometimes we undervalue ourselves. Most of the times we overrate everything but ourselves. As someone who works in the corporate world, I am often saddened by the reality that some people enjoy staying in their comfort zone, having the fact that the company’s making enough, they themselves are making enough, hence perceive themselves as doing enough. Be your own self with all the ability and knowledge you actually have. Raise the bar. Explore. And don’t rely on your company’s superiority and let ourselves be labeled by who we work for. It’s important to stand out as an individual, so people will remember that “she was the one who initiated the Rain campaign” instead of “she worked at XXX, the company who did the Rain campaign”.

    Good night, peeps…:)
